Dear Colleagues!
Welcome to SoRuCom 2011, the Second International Conference on the History of Computers and Informatics in the Soviet Union and Russian Federation.
Agenda
The first SoRuCom Conference took place in 2006 in Petrozavodsk, Russia. Researchers presented their talks and papers on the history of computer hardware and software in the USSR, Russia, and European Countries.
SoRuCom 2006 proved to be an event of high international interest. The importance and relevance of its subjects as well as the fact that many crucial milestones of the development of computers and computer science were not covered led us to the conclusion that a sequel history-oriented conference is necessary.
All the more important is that 2011 is a year with several notable dates: 100th anniversary of the corresponding member of RAS A. A. Lyapunov and 80th anniversary of the late academician A.P. Ershov, the masterminds of the national computer science. 2011 is also the 60th anniversary of the first Soviet computer, the M-1, and 50th anniversary of the Institute of Cybernetics in Kiev and the ALFA programming language; it is the 40th year since the creation of the operating system DISPAC for the BESM-6 computer. It is virtually impossible to list all interesting and important dates pertaining to the conference subject.
The Second International Conference SoRuCom 2011 will be held in Veliky Novgorod at the Yaroslav the Wise Novgorod State University. We anticipate talks and reports on the most interesting projects related to the computer hardware and software design and development, with the focus on the history of microelectronics and programming. We expect to hear invited talks of the veterans whose ingenuity and talent made possible the creation of the first national computers and operating systems, and talks of their contemporary successors engaged in the development and construction of cutting edge computers and programming systems.
The conference location, the city of Veliky Novgorod (Novgorod the Great), is the history-drenched ancient capital of the state of Kievan Rus. It is situated in the north-west of Russia where the river Volkhov falls into the lake Il’men and halfway from Moscow to St. Petersburg. It is a true gem of Russian architectural heritage, an important modern center of enlightenment and art, and a site of spiritual importance of the Russian Orthodox Church. We hope that the place will saturate and enrich the conference ambiance both scientifically and culturally.
